Christopher Columbus: A hero or a villain?

Posted by darbs on October 16, 2009

Yan ang tanong ko sa batang ito, habang naglalakad kami papuntang statue ni Christopher Columbus noong  Octobre 12, araw  ng Monday – the Columbus Day 2009 sa Central Park, New York, kung saan nakatayo ang estatuwa ni Crisoforo Colombo.

cpark-columbus-statue

Central Park: Christopher Columbus Statue

Aaminin kong in the morning ng “field trip” ay medyo merong conflict of interest. Ganito kasi un. Umaga habang nag-prepare for the field trip, itong batang ito  nag-backout at the last minute ayaw daw niyang pumunta sa Central Park.

cpark-1-09

” (words with a little tweak mula ka Jan Geronimo of Writing to Exhale)

cpark-walkingThink positively: Really? Cool! “Ang sarap pakinggan ng keywords – Read… Book report , homework…”

cpark-dusk

Pero teka muna: This field trip had been planned weeks ago based doon sa school year calendar. According sa to do list, Columbus Day, go to “Central Park” Rain or Shine, kahit uulan man, the trip must go on. Pag may “usapan” walang indyanan yan!

“Man,” come on you know better than that… remember?

cpar-rain-or-shine

Nag historical na ang tatay: Noon pa man kahit umuulan, pag-naka-plano na, we must go according to plan.

cpark-picnic

Ah!

cpar-larong-dama

Larong “dama” or “jumping jack” sa Central Park. I won! I won! na! na! na! na! na! YOU LOSE, I WON!” sabi pa ng bata. Nice game!”

cpark-flower

Flowers for the occasion

Pinakitang  he was unhappy, sad and unsatisfied. Nag-paru-parung bukid na at bukid paru-paru…nanlulupay-pay na shoulders pa man din, oi!” May kasama pa yang “sad eyes, oi!”

Solusyon: “Sige,” sabi pa nang Mother Dear, “kung matalo mo ang ama mo sa larong dama, you don’t have to go…pero pag matalo ka, then you need to go. deal?”

larong-dama

. .no mercy! MY MOVE kid! baam! Now, get up, take a shower and lets enjoy our trip!

DSC04381“Ano nga ba si Christopher Columbus?” Tanong ko sa bata. ” Siya ba ay isang hero or villain? ” But again depende. . .

“He is a hero, dude.” sagot ng bata.

touch-me-not

Touch me not!

Dagdag pa nya, “Tatay ang nakaraan ay nakaraan na…what is important is the present . . . “

columbus-circle

“EXCUSE ME! at saan mo naman nakuha yang pinagsasabi mo?” tanong ko.

“I am not telling you. I will take plead the 5th Amendment.”

"I could you not like this place?" Yes, he was growing...

Yes, he was growing...I missed the innocence.

he is a villain for killing all those native americans

Hello Ghettoblackify. thanks for passing by. As an antropologist as you claimed in your about page,

I am a part time anthropologist too – about page

I totally understand your point of view. I guess, what happened long time ago is more real to your perspective compared to my perspective living in a society where I am just making sense of what I have seen at present times without questioning its existence – – just wondering maybe how on earth did… and at the end decided to be an observer no more no less. All I know is that, those statues signify something and tell me a strong message that he is a “hero.”

In fact, there is this fraternity called KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS in honor of… guess who?. Obviously, for them, he is something special.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in the United States in 1882, it is named in honor of Christopher Columbus. source: wikipedia

As I said, the question on “Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain?” depends on your perspective.

      As the Exploration Packet goes,

Christopher Columbus is one of the trickest men in history. Many people consider him to be a hero; the brave explorer who risked his life to pursue his dream of finding a new way to asia. By doing this he happened upon the Americas and opened the “New World” up to Europeans. Other people have viewed Columbus as an Anti-hero who began a period of disease, death, slavery and oppression of Native Americans and Africans.

As you can see the five hundredth anniversary of Columbus’s first voyage was seen differently – for the indigenous and african descent identified him with imperialism, colonialism and conquest.

FYI: October 12th is a day of mourning for millions of indigenous people who died as a result of European colonization. – Adapted resolution of the National Council of Churches

It is unprotected now. Sorry about what I wrote below. It is now deleted. Thank you for opening your blog again.

OMG! What have I done now?

The last time I did was inform Gettoblackify that I will put her to my blogroll and I didn’t even sing part of Eagles’ song that says, “you can check out anytime you like but you can never leaaavveee…. then the adlib…”

SUDDENLY! FEW HOURS LATER WHEN I VISITED HER BLOG TO CHECK MY COMMENT, HER BLOG HAS BEEN PROTECTED?

      What did I do wrong?

Please help me understand this phenomenon of blog protected thingy? ANYBODY! SOMEBODY!

Please, this is just a blog! Everything I wrote here is nothing but blatant lies or truth or insanity or sanity.

      What is going on?

But again, I respect your decision no matter how painful to see a very informative blog went protected…

      Could I say, darn it!

I should have copied all the content of that blog!

      Now it is gone…

My apology if I did something and hoping that it is not my intrusion the reason for the decision to protect the blog.

—“Tatay ang nakaraan ay nakaraan na…what is important is the present . . . “

Never give up, even after failure.

  3. darbs said

Looking in the bright side amidst what happened long time ago…

Well, you made your point there Superlo. That reminded me sa packet na mula sa school as part of the reading materials ng social studies – entitled “Exploration” na sabi pa sa introduction…

Courage, curiosity, and greed made humans adventurous. The First explorers of the New World were Asians who chased games (animals) across the Bering Land Bridge and became Native Americans. Around 1000 AD the Vikings under Leif Ericson were the first Europeans to set foot on the American continent, briefly settling in Nova Scotia. -Exploration packet

    • Your welcome Darbs & salamat din for sharing Cat Steven’s Video.

  4. darbs said

@Superlo. it was in the middle of 80’s first time ko napakinggan itong awitin ni Cat Steven “Father and Son” sa isang folk house.

pero at that time the lyrics did not make sense at all especially the “find a girl… settle down,” dahil alam mo na umuusok-usok pa rin ung idea na mag-papari ako, eh!

Un bang tinatawag na BOKASYONG tang [deleted] “where few are chosen…” at vow of celibate/chastiti nila. (sensya na po kung sound sour…actually, not…I am just saying, dahil na remember ko na naman ung administrators – kung tawagin ay Ispirilitsugas na Damasoy at si Damasoy Wakalamoy)… what can i say.

kaya yan ang reason bakit didn’t make sense until today minus or deleted ung nakaraan sa buhay na “magpapari ako” then add na lang ung may anak ka na and then as you said “lolo” sa video.

Heto sya. Morning has broken. (tribute sa mga kasamahang batchmates/housemates/seminary mates/ who made it and those who did not but continue to live a life… whatever life that could be…)

Yang Morning Has Broken, Wild World & Father and Son…hits talaga sila.

—“Un bang tinatawag na BOKASYONG tang [deleted] “where few are chosen…”

—“those who did not but continue to live a life… whatever life that could be…)”

Nasa ibang ‘Purpose of Life’ ka na Darbs…be your best always.

“I have done my best.” That is about all the philosophy of living one needs.–Yutang, Lin

      Thanks for sharing.

  5. Darbs, ang ganda ng battle of wits story mo with your kid. And your son is one worthy opponent ha. Started rooting for him, but near the end I was aching for you to win this battle of wills. Indeed his time will come and when he can chuck out the wisdom of his parents. But not until then! Ahahaha.

Don’t want to touch the polemics as to whether Columbus is a hero or not. It’s a fine thread you weave your story around, but it’s these candid snapshots into your personal life that I fell for. You’ve made an ordinary family story going about its business extraordinary.

And you hesitate to call yourself a writer?

    Come on!

    • darbs said

Sori bro, but could not help it.

Geronimo was a prominent Native American leader and medicine man of the Chiricahua Apache who fought against Mexico and the United States and their expansion into Apache tribal lands for several decades. – source: wikipedia

Being said that, I agree with you. Pero ito lang, iba talaga ang dating ng mga trained writers/journalists (isa ka na doon) compared sa kagaya kong napilitan lang sumulat. heheheh. yah, that is right. I have no business in this writing thingy. nakisaw-saw de salawasaw na lang just to remain sane. In other words, “WRITING TO EXHALE!” kahit maraming mali. bahala na. Sa iyo ata galing ung kasabihang, “Publish now, check the wrong usage later…” or something similar.

What I am trying to say is yes, I am a blogger but not a writer quality type. Kaya, I don’t want to fool myself na matawag tawag na writer sa tinatawag nating standard professional form of writing/journalistic point of view.

But again, I am learning and/or on the process of learning…. Back to some of your suggestions like this blog entry:

      http://www.writingtoexhale.com/2009/09/surefire-but-often-ignored-trick-to-superb-writing.html

Sigi na nga… I am a writer in my own way but please don’t confuse me with the “Standard Writers” such authors/journalists/ because for me they are SPECIAL…

      • Darbs, Geronimo was one fine leader and warrior. It’s all right. It’s an honor to be spoken in the same breath with this great leader.

Okay, here goes, Darbs. Blogger, writer, or ano pa man. Labels lang yan. True, it’s comforting to be regarded as one. One of life’s psychic rewards, this.

Life is too short to be stumped by labels though. Family, that’s important. Personal growth. The will to do good in your short stint on earth. And the company of friends. All these make life worth living.

Can I cut in the long line at the pearly gate, buttressed by the silly tag that I was a writer or blogger? St. Peter along with his rooster would laugh their heads off at me. “,)

        • darbs said

Geronimo, may kasabihan na “Wag daw mamangka sa dalawang ilog…”

The truth is ako’y namamangka sa dalawang ilog. No, kahit limang ilog pa kayang kaya ko palang i-motor boat.

          Where am I?

          ah! ang sagot is…

Life is too short to be stumped by labels though. Family, that’s important. Personal growth. The will to do good in your short stint on earth. And the company of friends. All these make life worth living.

          EXACTLY!

St. Peter along with his rooster would laugh their heads off at me. “,)

That means to say, yaong laughing matters doesn’t mean anything.

From my perspective, kahit pag sasaksakin man ako seven times kagaya sa ginawa nila doon sa kakilala, or imodmod man ang ulo ko doon sa iniduro won’t change anything what I stand for or believe in. Walang makapagbago niyan.

In seriousness, tama din minsan ung counselor namin.

Bababoyin man natin sya dito sa internet, doesn’t mean anything to him dahil he avoided every blog, facebooks, twitter, myspace… so kung titingnan mo it will end up sa riddle

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

And I have no idea kung anong year bago ma-discover at marinig ang mga kantang yan. Kaya lang dahil ika ngay immortal songs ang mga yan, it doesn’t matter what year.

    In fact ganoon din ako.

well what could i do. hayz buhay nga naman. heto nag-ba-blahg na lamang. pasalamat din ako dahil kung wala ung pangyayari wala sana ako dito ngayon.

Pero salamat pala sa iyong paalala. you are right.

Nasa ibang ‘Purpose of Life’ ka na Darbs…be your best always.

If my best is not enough then… sigi pa rin ng sigi di ba? baka darating din ang araw na masasabi kong…

    Darbs,

Ang lalim mo pala and you can write very well in both Filipino and English, bravo! Meron kang “IT” factor. Sana may English blog ka rin about life there abroad, iyong mga funny events diyan. Alam ko magiging good read siya. All the best.

    • darbs said

Thank you po sa visitation and the dose of “hope and consolation…you give me hope to carry on…” sa sinabi ninyong…

Ang lalim mo pala and you can write very well in both Filipino and English, bravo!

Ninakaw ko lang pala ung “you give me hope to carry on” sa kantang “The Wonder of You”

Yung “IT” factor naman akala ko Information Technology factor, hindi pala “it factor” pala na as in…

sana may englis blog ka rin about life there abroad, iyong mga funny events diyan.

      Ya, about that…

(nakiusap sa isang kaluluwa – sori, Father (+) looking down at me from heaven for mentioning your name.)

I am not sure kung under his curse pa rin ako kahit dedo na sya.

Ang advise niya (seriously) “your english is hopeless Mr…you better go back to grade one and/or go back to your barrio and plant camote…”

      “That’s it, Father?”

Sabi pa, “What can I say?”

Then he walked away from me. I guess that was the message.

I wish he gave an advise differently but “hey, who could not take a joke from a priest na english professor in Englist grammar and composition ha? Is the joke was/is/will STILL on me?

    • darbs said

@Alkapon, ganoon naman talaga sa atin pag gusto mong matuto. makikimiron ka muna. kung may magagandang loob tuturuan ka ng basic moves after that you were on your own. sa observation ko dahil nga walang ibang laro kundi sungka, tumba lata, bato lata, tirador, luthang, tansan, lastiko, holen, taguan, at iba pa compare ngayon na parang high-tech na ang kabataan malamang gameboy, wii,PSP, nintendo, basta video games at computer na ang inaatupag ng mga bagong henerasyon. saang henerasyon ka ba na belong? heheheh. sensya na curious lang. di ko kasi akalaing may dama pa rin sa bagong generation.
